State the Objective
Tell the children that they will play a game of Drop a Dot Bingo as they practice saying the /d/ sound in words that begin with /d/, such as dot, dad, and dog.
Literacy Activities
Drop a Dot bingo
- Give each child a bingo card (see below) and make a pile of dots.
- Have the children name the pictures on the playing cards.
- Emphasize that the word for each picture on the cards begins with the letter D, which makes the /d/ sound.
- Draw a bingo calling card (see below) from the container.
- If the children have that picture on their card, have them put a dot on it and say, for example, “Dot, dot, dot on /d/, /d/, duck.”
- When a child gets bingo (single line horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or black out), have them call out, “Drop a dot!”
- When a child calls out “Drop a dot!” have them say the words underneath each dot, saying, for example, “/d/, /d/, dog starts with D.”
Read target words
- Have the children help you write a list of D words from the bingo cards, letting the children write the D each time.
- Read the list together, pointing to each word as you read it.
Write the target letter
- Have the children write the uppercase D and lowercase d on the back of their dots or small pieces of paper.
- Play Drop a Dot bingo again, having the children use the letter D side of the dot cards to mark off the bingo squares.
