Literacy Activities
Read about spinning spools and spouts

  • Write sp and tell the children that the letters make the /sp/ sound.
  • Read the Spin Spools target text (see below) to the children, emphasizing the /sp/ sound.
  • Help the children think of words they heard in the text that started with /sp/ and write them in a list.
  • Tell the children that they will practice spinning things that start with /sp/.

Spin and spill on spots and spaces

  • Spread out the spots (see below) in a spiral pattern while making comments:
    • "The spots are in a spiral!"
    • "Spots, spots, spreading out spots!"
    • "There are spaces between the spots!"
    • “Spots and spaces, spots and spaces."

  • Let the children use the spoon to spill objects that start with /sp/ on spots or in spaces.
  • Make comments while the children spin, spoon, and spill objects:
    • "Spin, spin, spin a ____ (e.g., sponge) on spots and in spaces."
    • "Spill and sprinkle on the spots and spaces."
    • "Put a ____ (e.g., spool) on your spoon."
    • "Can you spill a ____ (e.g., spool) on a space?"
    • "The ____ (e.g., sponge) goes splat on the spots and spaces!"

Spin on spots and spaces

  • Let the children take turns spinning on a spot or in a space on the floor.
  • Have the children repeat the /sp/ sound as they spin.
  • When they finish spinning, say, "Wow! You spun on the spots and spaces!"
