State the Objective
Tell the children that they will decorate a paper pretzel with the letter P as they recognize and name the uppercase letter P and lowercase letter p.
Literacy Activities
Pass the pretzel package
- Write and name the uppercase letter P and lowercase letter p and tell the children that P makes the /p/ sound.
- Have the children write the P and p in the air with their fingers while saying, “/p/, /p/, /p/, P!”
- Fold a piece of paper in half and tape the bottom and open side to make a package for pretzels.
- Fill the package with real or pretend pretzels (see below).
- Help the children write the letters P and p on small pieces of paper and paste them to the pretzel package.
- Have the children take turns saying, “Please pass the pretzel package!” and taking a real or pretend pretzel from the package.
Identify the target letter
- Write a P next to a distractor letter that the children already know.
- Invite the children to point to the letter P.
- Repeat the activity, changing the distractor letter and the letter order each time.
