Tell the children that they will clean a queen’s bean while they learn about words that rhyme with bean, such as queen, clean, and green.

Clean the bean

• Put pieces of green playdough on the picture of a bean, or put the bean in a page protector and color green spots on it with the marker.  
• Show the children the picture of the queen and tell them that she is a clean queen.
• Tell the children that the queen wants to eat the bean, but it is not clean.
• Invite the children to take turns cleaning the bean by saying, “Clean the green spots off the bean.”
• Make comments such as the following:
  
  • “The queen does not like green spots on the bean.”
  • “The queen wants a clean bean.”
  • “Have you ever seen green spots on a bean?”
  • “Clean the green spots off the bean!”
  • “Bean and queen rhyme!”
• When a child removes a green spot from the bean, ask the children, “Is the bean clean?”
• If there are still green spots on the bean, have the children respond, “No, there is green on the bean.”
• Repeat until there are no green spots left on the bean. 
• When there are no green spots on the bean, have the children say, “Yes! The bean is clean!” 

Find rhyming words 

• Ask each child to give you a word that rhymes with queen.
• If needed, ask guiding questions (e.g., “Does seen rhyme with bean?”). 
• Write a list of words that rhyme with -een (e.g., bean, queen, green, clean, seen, Halloween, between, mean).
• Read the list and have the children repeat the words after you.
