Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • had
  • glad
  • doodad

Materials:

  • Small object
  • Music (optional)

State and Model the Objective
The children will play a game to find a doodad as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with doodad, such as had, glad, mad, and lad.

Literacy Activities
Who Had the Doodad? game

  • Have the children sit on the floor in a circle and tell them that a doodad is a little object whose name you have forgotten.
  • Explain the rules of the game, Who Had the Doodad
    • One child will be "it" and stand off to the side, facing away from the circle.
    • One child sitting in the circle will be given the doodad and will start passing it quietly around the circle.
    • Play music (optional) or have the children say, "Who had the doodad?" while the doodad is passed from child to child.
    • Stop the music or say, "Stop doodad!" and have all of the children pretend to hold the doodad in their hands, whether they have it or not.
    • The child who is "it" will turn around and go from child to child asking, "Do you have the doodad?"
    • When the child holding the doodad is found, that child will say, "I had the doodad!" and will be "it" for the next round.
  • Point out that the word had rhymes with doodad.

The doodad chant

  • As a class, make up a chant using -ad words about being glad that you found the doodad (e.g., "I'm not sad. I'm not mad. I am glad because we had the doodad!").
  • March around in a circle and say the chant together.
  • Each time you say a word that rhymes with had, have the children raise their hands, clap, or stomp extra loud.

More Practice
Produce words that rhyme with had

  • Remind the children of the words that rhyme with had (doodad, glad).
  • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with had (dad, sad, lad).
  • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with had (support as needed).

Recognize rhyming words

  • Have the children repeat a set of two words (e.g., had, mad).
  • Ask the children to show you a glad face if the words rhyme and a sad face if the words do not rhyme.
  • Repeat with other sets of words (e.g., fad, bad; tad, Chad; lad, cat; glad, dad; pad, dog; rad, sad).

Materials

  • Pictures of three people

Activity: Who Had the Doodad?

  • Write "doodad" on three pieces of paper.
  • Place the pictures on a table and have your child close his or her eyes while you hide a "doodad" under one of the pictures.
  • Have your child open his or her eyes and guess which picture the doodad is under by saying, "He/She had the doodad!"
  • If your child guesses correctly, then he or she gets to keep the doodad.
  • Switch roles and have your child hide a doodad under one of the pictures and have you guess who had the doodad.
  • Repeat the game until there are no doodads left.
  • Count how many doodads each person had (e.g., one doodad, two doodads, three doodads) and see who had the most doodads.
  • Remind your child that had and doodad rhyme, then take turns saying words that rhyme with had (e.g., sad, glad, rad, fad, lad).
