State the Objective
Tell the children that they will care for plants that have ants as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with plants, such as ants, prance, dance, and pants.
Literacy Activities
Introduce the target pattern
- Show the children the target words: ants, prance, dance, and pants.
- Read the words to the children and talk about how they rhyme.
Take care of plants that have ants
- Show the children the plants or plant picture (see below) and explain that you need help taking care of plants that have ants.
- Point out that the words ants and plants rhyme, and explain that the word prance means to take high, springy steps like a horse.
- Let the children pantomime different actions while making comments about ants on plants.

Chant about ants
- Read the Ants on the Plants chant (see below) to the children.
- Act out the chant together and point out the words that rhyme with plants.
- Let the children repeat and act out the chant, supporting as needed.
- Repeat with the Ants! Ants! target text (see below).
Recognize rhyming words
- Have the children repeat a set of two words (e.g., plants, ants).
- Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme (support as needed).
- Repeat with other sets of words (e.g., chants, prance; glance, pants; dance, cat; rants, grants).

Objective
Recognize and produce words that rhyme with plants.
Materials
- Ants on the Plants chant
Activity: Looking for Ants on Plants
- Read the Ants on the Plants chant to your child and create actions to go with the words.
- Read the chant again and have your child prance (take high, springy steps like a horse) when you say a word that rhymes with plants (support as needed).
- Go outside with your child and have them hunt for plants.
- When your child finds plants, look to see if there are any ants.
- Say the Ants on the Plants chant together again.
- Prance and dance together and say, "No ants on our plants!" or "Oh my! Ants on our plants!" depending on what you find in your plants.
- Tell each other words that rhyme with plants (e.g., ants, dance, prance, chance, France).
