Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • green
  • seen
  • bean
  • clean
  • screen
  • Halloween

Materials:

  • Picture cards (two sets)

Overview
The children will pretend to be Detective Green and hunt for things like a bean and a queen as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with seen, such as lean, mean, dean, sunscreen, and Halloween.

Practice the skill within an activity
Play Detective Green

  • Hide one set of picture cards around the room, and place the other set in a pile.
  • Invite a child to pretend to be Detective Green and then pick and identify a picture card for the class.
  • Have the child hunt for the matching card as the other children chant, “Detective Green, Detective Green, have you seen (a) ___ (name of picture card)?”
  • When the child finds the picture card, have him or her bring it back to the group.
    • Say together, “Detective Green, Detective Green, now you’ve seen (a) ___ (name of picture card)!”
  • Allow different children to pretend to be Detective Green until all the picture cards have been found.

Have you seen what I have seen?

  • Shuffle and lay out all of the picture cards on a table or floor in front of the children.
  • Choose one child to pick up a card and say, “I have seen (a) ___ (name of picture card).”
  • Have other children look for the matching picture card and when they see it, have the children raise their hands.
  • Call on the first child that raised their hand and invite them to point to the picture card and name it (e.g., Halloween).
  • Have the child who found the picture card be the next one to choose a card to find.

Apply the skill

  • Show the children two of the picture cards and help them identify the pictures.
  • Lead the children in chanting, “We have seen (a) ___ (first card), and ___ rhymes with ___ (second card).
    • For example, “We have seen a bean, and bean rhymes with Halloween.”
  • Repeat with the rest of the cards.
