Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research (UCUR)

Purpose & Overview

University students and mentors from across Utah gather annually to share academic, research, and creative activities with oral presentations and posters. Every year a different university hosts the conference, and MSE students and their mentors are encouraged to participate. BYU covers the expense of the conference registration and transportation (chartered bus) for all students presenting as well as for faculty members who attend.

3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

Purpose & Overview

BYU Competition: Individual BYU colleges hold their competition to determine one competitor who will advance the university-wide competition.

Who is Eligible to Participate?

Master's, Education Specialists, and Doctoral Candidates.
Graduate students who received funding from the MSE are invited to participate in both the 3MT and the MSE Mentored Research Conference.

Tuesday, February 13th 2024 at 4:00 pm in 185 MCKB

BYU Date and Location

Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 11:00 am in the WSC Varsity Theater

Mentored Research Conference

Purpose & Overview

This conference is held annually to showcase research activities of undergraduate and graduate students mentored by McKay School faculty. Presentations are poster style.

Students participating in the conference may also choose to participate in the poster contest that is held as part of the conference. There is an undergraduate and graduate category in the contest with money awarded to the top five winners in each category.

Who is Eligible to Participate?

All students engaged in McKay School of Education (MSE) and those in teacher preparation programs in the Arts and Science colleges are invited to participate.

Who is Required to Participate?

The following requirements from the McKay School are the minimum. Each department has a set of requirements as well. Please contact your department for additional information.

Invited participants:

  1. Students who receive MSE funding for work on research projects.
  2. Students who receive MSE funding as research assistants.
  3. Master's, Educational Specialists, and Doctoral students who are not being paid for their research but are required by their departments to participate.

Funded graduate students are invited to participate in both the 3MT and the MSE Mentored Research Conference.

Poster Contest

The main event is the conference. The poster contest is part of the conference. Participation in the contest is optional. The poster contest includes two divisions, one for graduate students and one for undergraduate students.

Poster Contest Due Date

Please submit a PDF of your poster to lynnette_christensen@byu.edu, by Friday, March 15th 2024 11:59 pm

Poster Contest Awards

Poster contest awards will be given at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

1st place: $500 student and $500 faculty mentor
2nd place: $300 student and $300 faculty mentor
3rd place: $200 student and $200 faculty mentor

Honorable Mention: $100 student and $100 faculty mentor
* Faculty must be present at the awards ceremony to receive their award.

Instructions for Printing Posters for the Conference

  • Posters cannot be printed until after the registration deadline.
  • You will receive an email letting you know when the list has been sent to Makerspace and reminding you of the instructions.

The McKay School of Education (MSE) will only pay for Posters-

  • of students registered for the conference
  • printed at the Harold B. Lee Library Makerspace (4th floor at the top of the South stairs)

Send a PDF of your poster to makerspace@byu.edu

  1. State in the name of the first person listed on your registration and that the poster is for the McKay School Mentored Research Conference (They will have a list of who we will pay for.)
  2. Instruct them to make the poster 3'x4'

Participation the Day of the Conference

  1. Bring your poster to the WSC Garden Court between 10:00-12:00 on April 9th so we can hang them. (If you can't come at that time, ask a friend or your chair/mentor to bring if for you.)
  2. You will then need to be present at the conference to stand by your poster from 4:00-5:00.
