Tell the children they will make straight streets while practicing reading and writing words that begin with /str/.

Literacy Activities
Comment that in the words street and straight the letters s, t, and r combine to make /str/.

Make different kinds of streets

• Let the children use straight strips of paper and line them up to make a straight street (strips of paper placed parallel with an area between to be the street).
• Have the children make other straight streets using string or straws.
• Let the children place down streamers (made of cloth or paper) in curvy lines to make a street that is not straight.
• Make a street with stripes by placing strips of paper (or by drawing lines with chalk) in the street to connect the parallel lines.
• Let the children strew strips, streamers, or string all over the streets. Comment on how they wouldn’t really strew streamers or strips of paper or string all over a real street.
• Have the children make signs to label each type of street: straight, not straight, striped, strewn with strings and straws.

Act out various /str/ activities on the street

• Let the children choose a sentence strip. Then have them read the sentence and act out the action on the different kinds of streets they made:
  • Stand in a straight line then stroll down a straight street.
  • Strut down a street that is not straight.
  • Strew strings and straws while striding down the street.
  • Stop and stretch on a street with stripes.

Read target words in texts:

• Engage the children in reading the target text Strut and Stride Down the Street together with the group.
• Have the children make a list of the words that begin with /str/.
• Read the text again, fading support.
• Have the children reenact the activity as they read by pretending there is a street on their desk and using their fingers to strut and stroll along the street.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

• Give each child a paper and pencil and let them write words from dictation: street, stripes, strips, strings, straws, stroll, and strut. Let them write about what they can do with different kinds of streets (e.g., I can strut down a straight street. I can make a street with stripes. I can stroll down a street that is not straight. I can strew straws and strings down a street.)
