Tell the children that they will turn a box into a place for socks and then read and write words ending in -x and -cks, such as box, fox, blocks, rocks, socks, locks, and clocks.

Literacy Activities
Play a game with Mrs. Fox

• Display the words socks, clocks, rocks, locks, box, and blocks.
• Ask the children questions and let them choose a word to answer the question.
  • What can Mrs. Fox wear on her feet? Socks.
  • What can Mrs. Fox use to tell time? Clocks.
  • What can Mrs. Fox find on the ground? Rocks.
  • What can Mrs. Fox use to build a tower? Blocks.
  • What can Mrs. Fox put on her doors? Locks.
• What can Mrs. Fox use to store socks, blocks, or rocks? A box.
• Ask the children to write the words socks, clocks, rocks, blocks, locks, and box.
• Have the children count the sounds and letters in the words displayed.

Turn a box into a place for socks

• Read the book Not a Box by Antoinette Portis (optional).
• Let the children imagine that a box can be multiple things.
• Say, “A box can be a ____ _____,” and hold up signs for the children to read.
  • place for socks
  • door with locks
  • cave for a fox
  • block to stack with other blocks
  • wall for clocks 
  • lunch box
• Count the sounds and letters in the words box, locks, fox, blocks, rocks, clocks, and socks.

Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
With word-building cards (see below), have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:

• Change the beginning consonant(s): fox→ box, clocks→ blocks, rocks→ socks
• Change the ending: fox→ fog, box→ bop, blocks→ blots, socks→ sobs, box→ blocks, six→ sticks, fix→ flicks, sax→ sacks, lax→ lacks
• Change the vowels: fox→ fix, socks→ sacks, clocks→ clucks
   

Read target words in texts 

• Engage the children in reading the target text Pack Snacks and Socks in a Box (see below) together.
• Read the target text again, fading support.
• Have the children make a list of the -x and -cks words in the text.

Write about the activity using target words

• Let the children write words from dictation that end in -x (e.g., fox, box, fix, six, sax, lax). 
• Have children write words from dictation that end in cks (e.g., socks, blocks, clocks, rocks, docks, sticks, flicks, sacks, lacks, clucks, locks).
• Engage the children in writing about a fox or a box and ask them to use some of the -x  and -cks words.
