State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will pretend to find a stone in an ice cream cone and will read and write words with long-o-silent-e words, such as cone, stone, bone, lone, and phone.
Literacy Activities
Make a cone
- Let the children roll a round piece of paper to form a cone (see below).
- Have the children write the word cone on the cone.
- Make strips of paper to write other -one words on.
- Ask the children to place the -one words cone inside the cone
- Have the children put a crumpled piece of paper in their cone to make a pretend ice cream cone.
Find a stone or a bone in a cone
- Slip small stones or pictures of stones (see below) in some cones.
- Slip pictures of bones (see below) into some cones.
- Let the children pretend to lick the cone and find the stone or bone.
- Have children slip stones or bones in some other cones.
- Have the children exclaim, “Oh no! There is a stone in my cone!”
Phone home to tell about stones in cones
- Pretend to hand out phones.
- Ask the children to phone home and exclaim, “I found a stone (or bone) in an ice cream cone!”
More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
With word-building cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
- Change the beginning consonant(s): cone→ bone, phone→ shone, lone→ bone, stone→ scone
- Change the vowel: cone→ cane, lone→ lane, shone→ shine
- Change the ending consonant(s): bone→ bore, shone→ shore, stone→ store, scone→ score
Read target words
- Display the Stone in My Cone target text (see below) for everyone to see.
- Read the story to and then with the class.
- Repeat with A Cone without a Stone (see below).
Write about the activity
- Have the children write -one words from dictation to put in their cones (e.g., scone, shone, phone, cone, stone, bone, lone).
- Write -one words on the board and read them with the class.
- Have the children write a letter home saying that they found a stone in their cone.
