State the Objective
Tell the children that they will set up a sale and that they will read and write words with a silent e, such as sale, home, bike, game, vase, kite, and skate.

Literacy Activities
Introduce the target pattern

  • Display silent-e target words (e.g., sale, home, bike, game, vase, kite, skate) and read the words with the children.
  • Explain that the e at the end of the long-vowel words is silent and makes the vowel say its name.

Set up a sale

  • Read the Sale Today and A Sale at My Home target texts (see below).
  • Support the children in writing silent-e sale signs (e.g., Kate's Sale, Vases for Sale, A Home Sale, Things I Made to Sell, A Bike and Skate Sale, a Cake Sale, Games for Sale).
  • Have the children read each other’s signs and pretend to use dimes to buy each other’s imaginary sale items (e.g., kites, bikes, games, skates, cakes, homes, vases).
  • Help the children label silent-e picture cards (see below).

Sort silent-e words

  • Have the children separate silent-e words cards (see below) according to the vowel.
  • Have the children write silent-e words from dictation (e.g., sale, home, bike, game, vase, kite, skate).

Contrast the number of letters and sounds

  • Have the children separate silent-e words cards (see below) according to the vowel.
  • Have the children write silent-e words from dictation (e.g., sale, home, bike, game, vase, kite, skate).

Sale Today

Look! I see a sale at that home.
I see a note that says, “Sale Today.”
Kids and moms and dads get in line to go in-side the home.
Let’s line up to go in-side.

Lots of things are for sale.
The mom has a vase for sale.
The dad has a bike for sale.
The kids have some games, skates, and kites for sale.

The things at this sale don’t cost much.
Some things cost just a dime.
I gave a dime for a game.

I like to shop at sales in a home!
