Tell the children that they will make picture frames and that they will read and write silent-e words, such as make, live, save, made, frame, slide, and place.
Literacy Activities
Introduce the target pattern
- Display a list of silent-e target words and read the words with the children.
- Explain that the e at the end of the words is silent and makes the vowel say its name.
Make a frame
- Read the Change the Picture Inside the Frame target text (see below) with the children.
- Help the children make a frame by taping craft sticks to the sides of a piece of cardstock.
- Let the children decorate the frame and have them write the word frame at the top.
Make pictures for a frame
- Show the children the sample silent-e pictures (see below).
- Tell the children to choose one of the silent-e pictures and draw five of it (e.g., five grapes, five smiles, five cakes).
- Have the children label their pictures (e.g., Five Limes, Five Kites, Five Fives) and take turns putting their picture in the frame.
Contrast the number of letters and sounds
- List silent-e target words (e.g., place, frame, make, save, made, like, slide).
- Write a silent-e word (e.g., make) and ask:
- How many letters does it have? (e.g., four, m + a + k + e)
- How many sounds does it have? (e.g., three, m + ā + k)
