Materials:
- Small pieces of paper
- Two envelopes of different sizes
State the Objective
Tell the children that they will let E letters enter envelopes and then empty every envelope as they associate the short-e sound with the letter E.
Literacy Activities
Make Es enter and exit an envelope
- Write and name an uppercase E and lowercase e.
- Comment that E and e make the short-e sound.
- Have the children write E and e on small pieces of paper
- Show an envelope with an E on it.

Let the children make every E enter the envelope by putting the Es they
wrote inside.
- Allow the children to empty the envelope.
- Comment:
- “Empty the envelope!”
- “The Es exit the envelope.”
- “Empty every E from the envelope.”
- “The envelope is empty!”
Let a small envelope enter and exit a big envelope
- Have the children write E on a big envelope and e on a small envelope.
- Show the children how the little envelope can enter the big envelope.
- Empty the big envelope by making the little envelope exit the big envelope.
- Comment on how E makes the /e/ sound:
- “/E/, /e/, /e/, enter an envelope.”
- “/E/, /e/, /e/, Es exit an envelope!”
- “Every envelope is /e/, /e/, /e/, empty.”
