Lost Luggage
Objective
Associate the uppercase letter L and lowercase letter l with the /l/ sound as in lost, lane, and lamp.

Overview
The children will help Luke find his lost luggage as they practice writing the uppercase letter L and lowercase letter l and saying the /l/ sound in words such as letter, leaf, and luggage.
Literacy Activities
Look for lost Ls
- Hide the letter cards around the room.
- Invite the children to look for Ls while saying the /l/ sound.
- When they find an L, comment that L makes the /l/ sound.
Look for lost luggage
- Make a long lane on the floor masking tape.
- Place the pictures cards of words that start with L along the lane.
- Cut out the luggage by following the directions below.
- Show children the picture of Luke and tell them that he lost items from his luggage (explain that luggage is a suitcase) along a lane (explain that a lane is a road).
- Take turns walking along the long lane to find Luke’s lost items from his luggage.
- When a child finds an item, have him or her name the item for the class.
- Repeat the name of the item, emphasizing the /l/ sound at the beginning of the word.
- Have the children put the items back in the luggage by placing the pictures through the slit.
More Practice
Read target words in a text
- Read the Luke’s Lost Luggage target text to the children.
- Have the children find and circle the letter L throughout the story and say the /l/ sound each time they circle the letter L.
- Read the text again and have the children make an L with their fingers every time they hear a word that starts with the /l/ sound.
Leap to the L
- Place three different letters on the ground.
- Ask the children to leap to the letter that makes the /l/ sound.
- Have the children say the /l/ sound when they land on the letter L.
- Decorate Luke’s luggage with Ls.
- Glue the letter cards on the front of Luke’s luggage.
- Write the uppercase letter L and lowercase letter l on the back of the luggage.
