Materials:

  • Pretend wands (e.g., pencils, sticks, drinking straws)
  • Small pieces of paper
  • Wish with a Wizard’s Wand target text*

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will learn about the letter W and the /w/ sound as they make wishes with a wizard.  

 

Literacy Activities
Wave a wand to make Ws

  • Write and name the uppercase W and lowercase w.
  • Tell the children that the letter W makes the /w/ sound.
  • Hold a pretend wand and tell the children that you are a wizard who can grant wishes with a wand.
  • Wave your wand and say that you wish for Ws.
  • Have the children write Ws in the air while repeating the /w/ sound.

Wish for a wizard to grant a wish

  • Ask the children if they would like to wish for things that begin with /w/ and think of examples (e.g., wagon, waffle, watch, whistle, wheel, worm, whale, wig, window, water).
  • Tell the children that a wizard will grant their wishes and ask:
    • “Would you wish for a white watch?”
    • “What will you wish for? A wide window?”
    • “Would you wish for a wig or a wheel?”
    • “Want to wish for a wagon?”
  • Wave your wand and write the words the children wished for.

  • Read the text to the children and have them point out the W words.
  • Make a list of the W words and read them to the children.

A wizard can wave a wand to grant wonderful wishes!
What will you wish for?

Would you wish for a wiggly worm?
A warm waffle?
A white wig?
A wide window?
A wagon with wheels?
A watch to wear?

What will you do with your wish?
Wish to watch a wet whale in water?  
Whirl with wings in the wind?
Walk and wander in the woods?

The wizard will wave a wand.
And whoosh!  
The wizard will grant wonderful wishes!
What a win!
