Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • bin
  • tin
  • pin
  • fin
  • spin
  • win

Materials:

  • Tin can with a lid
  • Picture cards
  • Clothespins
  • Bin label
  • Word blending cards

Overview
The children will play with a tin and a bin as they add sounds to the -in ending to make words, such as bin, win, spin, and pin.

Literacy Activities
Spin, pin, and throw it in the bin

  • Put picture cards in a tin can and put the lid back on.
  • Let children spin the tin, then open the lid and pick a card from the tin.
  • Have the children name the picture on the card then decide if the word ends with -in
    • If the word ends with -in, have the children clip it with a pin (clothespin) and throw it in the bin.
    • If the card does not end with -in, have the children discard the picture and spin the tin again.
  • Repeat as many times as desired.

More Practice
Identify, blend and manipulate sounds

  • Have children blend individual sounds into words by tapping their head (beginning sound) and toes (-in sound) then clap to say the whole word.
    • w in = win
    • p in = pin
    • b in = bin
    • t in = tin
  • With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
    • Change the beginning sound: win → bin; pin → tin; bin → fin
    • Change the ending sound: bin → bit; pin → pig; tin → tip
    • Change the middle sound: bin → ban; tin → ten; pin → pun

Write about the activity using target words

  • Write the word pin on a whiteboard and read the word together.
  • Erase the beginning sound, leaving the -in, on the whiteboard.
  • Have a child write a new beginning letter (e.g., b, d, f, t, w).
  • Read the new word together, separating the beginning sound and -in word ending before blending them together.
  • Repeat with the other letters.
