Lesson Plan

Target Words:

Materials:

  • Toy fish 
  • Large plastic bowl labeled “dish”
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Plastic bowls
  • Toss the Fish target text
  • Fish stickers (optional) 

Overview
The children will get a fish into a dish as they add sounds to the –ish ending to spell words such as fish, wish, and dish.

Literacy Activities
Wish for a fish in your dish

  • Teach the children the chant: “Wish! Wish! Get the fish in the dish!”
  • Have children take turns tossing a toy fish into a plastic bowl as everybody says the chant.
  • If a child gets the fish in the dish, have all of the children say, “The fish is in the dish!” and let that child get a fish sticker (optional).
  • Hand out goldfish crackers in small plastic bowls and have the children gently swish them around in their bowls.

More Practice
Read target words in a text 

  • Read the target text Toss the Fish together as a class. 
  • Read the text again fading support.
  • Have the children underline the words that end in –ish.

Write about the activity using target words

  • Have a child say a word ending in –ish
  • Have another child write it on the board. 
  • Have another child change the first letter to make a new word.
  • Continue this pattern as many times as desired.
