State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will stack things on a train track and read and write words that end with -ack, such as stack, track, sack, snack, and jack. 

Literacy Activities
Stack on the track 

• Before the activity, set out a piece of toy train track or a paper train track. 
• Cut out and attach a word card to each block.
• Teach the children the Stack, Stack, Stack chant.
• Assign a block to each of 4 children and have them read the -ack word that is on their block. 
• Have the children repeat the chant and, when called for, let the 4 children stack their blocks.
• Repeat if desired, allowing other children to stack the blocks.

Identify, blend and manipulate sounds 

• Let the children make different words from letter cards by changing a consonant or the vowel.
  • Change a beginning sound(s): sack → jack; stack → track; snack → stack 
  • Change the vowel sound: sack → sock; stack → stuck; track → trick
  • Change an ending sound(s): jack → jar; stuck → stub; track → trap 

Read target words in a text 

• Have the children underline the words that end in -ack in the Stack, Stack, Stack chant. 
• Read the chant to the children. 
• Engage the children in reading the chant simultaneously with you. 
• Read the chant again, fading support. 

Write about the activity using target words and phrases 

• Display target words on a word wall (i.e., stack, track, sack, snack, jack) and then engage the children in one of the following: 
  • Re-read the target text and permit the children to write their own version of the text. 
  • Have the children write a sentence or two expressing ideas from the lesson activity or target text (e.g., I can stack a sack on a track).
