Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- sock
- block
- rock
- clock
- lock
Materials:
- –ock Picture Block (cut out and assemble)
- Picture cards
- Small rocks
- Tally Sheet
- Word blending cards
- Rock on a Sock target text
Overview
The children will play a game where they roll a block and toss a rock while they read and write words ending in –ock such as block, lock, sock, and rock.
Literacy Activities
Roll a block and toss a rock
- Set the pictures in a 2X2 grid on the floor and have the children sit around them.
- Choose 1 child to roll the block and read the –ock word it landed on, then have all of children mark a tally under that word on their Tally Sheets.
- Choose 4 or 5 children to toss a small rock onto the corresponding image on the floor. The person who gets the rock the closest wins.
- Repeat, choosing different children to roll the block and toss a rock each time.
More Practice
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- With word blending cards, have the children make new words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel:
- sock → flock; clock → block; lock → rock
- sock → sack; clock → cluck; lock → lick
- lock → lot; flock → floss; rock → rod
Read and write target words
- Read the Rock on a Sock target text to the class, and have the children clap each time they hear a word that ends in –ock.
- Make a list of –ock words from the target text on the board.
- Read the list together as a class.
- Ask the children what letters are the same in every word on the list.
