Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • Picture of a gameboard*

  • Word cards*
  • Word-building cards*
  • King Tut target text*

State the Objective

Tell the children that they will play a King Tut game and that they will read and write words that end with ut, such as hut, tut, nut, but, and cut.

Literacy Activities

Introduce target words

  • Show the children the -ut target words.
  • Read the words with the children.

Play a King Tut game

  • Read the King Tut target text (see below) with the children.
  • Divide the children into small groups and give each group a King Tut game board (see below).
  • Give each child a -ut game piece (see below) and have them color it in.
  • Tell the children that they will roll the die and move their game piece the specified number of spaces.
  • Explain that, if a child lands on a -ut word, they take a -ut word card from King Tut’s hut (the box) and read it out loud.
  • Tell the children that the person with the most word cards at the end of the game gets to wear King Tut’s crown (see below) for the next round.

Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • With word-building cards (see below), have the children make new words by changing a consonant or the vowel.
    • Change the beginning consonant: tut→ hut; nut→ but; hut→ cut 
    • Change the vowel: but→ bat; hut→ hit; nut→ net
    • Change the ending consonant: but→ bun; cut→ cup; nut→ nun

Write sentences using target words and phrases

  • Let the children write short sentences using target words.
    • King ____ (Tut) lives in a ____ (hut).
    • He has a ____ (nut) in his ____ (hut).
    • His ____ (hut) has words like ____ (cut).
