*B in the Bag

Objective
Recognize the /b/ sound in words and associate the letter B with the /b/ sound.
Lesson Plan

Materials:
- Bag
- Optional: object(s) that begin with /b/ (e.g., bottle, box, bowl, ball, book, belt, button, bandage)
State the Objective
Tell the children that they will pack a bag and that they will associate the B/b with the /b/ sound in words such as bag, book, and ball.
Literacy Activities
Guess B words based on actions
- Let the children guess words that begin with /b/ when provided with an action
- Ball: make a round shape with hands
- Bird: flap arms
- Bike: pretend to pedal and steer
- Book: put hands together in an open book shape and pretend to read
- Baby: rock an imaginary baby in arms
- Bug: make fingers crawl across a surface (e.g., table, ground, arm)
- Pretend to put the objects in the bag as you make comments:
- We hear the /b/ sound in ball and bag.
- Put a bottle, a box, and a book in the bag.
- The ball bounces in the bag.
- Put a bug in a bag!
- Add real objects that start with /b/ to the bag (optional).
Blend B words
Have the children put out one hand for the initial consonant, then the other hand for the word ending. Have them clap when they say the word.
B + all = ball
B + ike = bike
B + ird = bird
B + ook = book
B + ad = bag
B + ig = big
B +ug = bug
Put Bs in and on a bag
- Show the children the letter B and make the /b/ sound.
- Have the children write Bs in the air.
- Have the children write Bs on small pieces of paper and put them inside a bag.
- Make comments:
- B makes the /b/ sound in bag.
- The B is in the bag!
- A bag with a ball, bottle, and book.
- I hear /b/ in bag, big, ball, book, ball
