Objective
Recognize and identify uppercase letter D and lowercase letter d; associate the letter with the /d/ sound in words such as dance, doing, and dig.

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will learn a song about the letter D/d and practice finding the /d/ sound in words like dance, dig, dip, and do.
Literacy Activities
Do As I’m Doing
- Show the children an uppercase letter D and lowercase letter d; have them write the letters in the air with their fingers while saying the /d/ sound.
- Teach the children the song “Do As I’m Doing” (see below)
- Show the children action words that begin with /d/: dig, dance, dip down, dive, drive, drum, drop.
- Have the children do actions for the words.
- Let children take turns being the leader while singing “Do as I’m Doing” using the /d/ action words, as shown in the text for the song.
Make D words and write D/d
- Show the letter D/d; let the children name the letter and say the sound.
- Let the children take turns acting out the words dig, dance, dip, dive, drum, and drop, while others guess the action.
- List action words without the initial d (e.g., __ig, __ance, __ip, __ive, __rum, __rop); let the children fill in the missing letter.
- Help the children write D and d while saying the /d/ sound.
