Objective
Associate the letter B with the /b/ sound in words such as bat, baby, and bug.

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will feed brown bugs to a baby black bat and listen for /b/ in words such as bat, bug, big, bag, and brown.
Literacy Activities
Bring the baby black bat big bugs
- Draw a simple bat with a big mouth at the bottom of a piece of paper (example below)
- Cut out the bat’s mouth and fold the paper so it stands up.
- Show the children the baby black bat and say that he likes to eat big brown bugs.
- Read the Bugs for Baby Black Bat text (see below) to the children.
- Let the children find the Bs in the text.
Feed bugs to the baby bat
- Have the children write the letter B on small pieces of paper.
- Show the children how B can become a bug by drawing antennae and legs (see example below).
- Let the children follow your example and turn all the Bs into “bugs.”
- Have the children say, “/b/, /b/, a big bug for Baby Bat!” as they “feed” the bugs to Baby Black Bat.
