State the Objective

Tell the children that they will learn to associate the letter with the /f/ sound as they flick and fling Fs, fold Fs, or make Fs fall.

Literacy Activities

Act on Fs

  • Tell the children that the letter F makes the /f/ sound.
  • Say words that start with the /f/ sound and extend the /f/ sound (e.g., fold, fun, feather, four, fork, foot).
  • Have the children write uppercase and lowercase Fs on pieces of paper.
  • Let the children act on the Fs in various ways:
    • Fold the Fs
    • Flick and fling the Fs
    • Let the Fs fall
    • Feel the Fs
  • Act on Fs using materials that start with /f/, such as fuzz, feathers, fans, and fabric:
    • Feel Fs on your foot, fingers, and face
    • Let Fs float or fall fast
    • Flick and fling Fs (make sure to use materials that are safe to fling)

Fit Fs in frames

  • Tell the children that they are going to make a frame for Fs.
  • Have the children fold the top, bottom, and sides of a piece of paper to make a frame, or draw a frame.
  • Have the children write Fs on the frame.
  • Let the children draw things that start with F in the frame (e.g., fan, fuzz, feather, fork). For ideas, see examples below.

Put Fs in a folder and a fan

  • Have the children make an F folder by folding a piece of paper.
  • Have the children write Fs on the folder and put Fs in the folder.
  • Let the children put materials or drawings of things that start with F in the folder (e.g., feather, fork, fuzz, fabric).
  • Let the children make a paper fan, put Fs on the fan, and put the fan in the folder.

Example Images for “Fs in Frames”

  1. Draw four fans in the frame

2. Draw a fan, fork, feather, and fuzz in the frame

3. Draw five forks in the frame.

*These images are examples only. The teacher can put any F objects in the frame.
