Objective
Associate the letter K with the /k/ sound in words such as king, kite, and kind.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:

Materials:
- Small pieces of paper
- King nametag
- Kite-shaped paper or drawing of a kite (example below)
State the Objective
Tell the children that they will write Ks on a kite and be kind to King K as they make the /k/ sound in words such as keep, kite, and key.
Literacy Activities
Put Ks on a kite
- Write the letter K and say that it makes the /k/ sound.
- Put on a nametag that says king and say, “I’m a king, a kind king.”
- Have the children make the /k/ sound as they write Ks for the king on small pieces of paper.
- Show a drawing of a kite (example below) and say that the kite is for the kind king.
- Let the children write Ks on the kind king’s kite.
Actions of a kind king
- Ask the children to listen for the /k/ sound as you read the words kitten, kite, kangaroo, key, kid, kitchen, and kettle.
- Ask questions about what the kind king could do in the kingdom:
- In the kingdom, would Kind King K . . . .
- Kiss a kitten?
- Fly a kite with kids
- Kiss a kangaroo?
- Keep a key to the kingdom?
- Feed a kid in the kitchen?
- Keep a kettle in the kitchen?
- Kick a kangaroo out of the kingdom?
- Have the children hold up a K when they hear a /k/ sound in the questions.
