Literacy Activities
Draw nice things on a new napkin

  • Write an N and tell the children that it makes the /n/ sound.

  • Have the children draw other items that begin with N (e.g., nine, nail, necktie, noodle, note, necklace, needle, nut).

Identify the target letter

  • Say a word that begins with /n/ (e.g., nice, nail, nut, not); ask the children if the word starts with /n/ while nodding your head yes.
  • Give several examples of words that start with N (e.g., nut, nose, nail, noodle, nice, new) and have the children touch their noses when they hear an /n/ sound.
  • Ask the children if the word boat starts with /n/ while shaking your head no.

Write the letter N

  • Say words that begin with N while extending the initial /n/ sound:
    • “/n/, /n/, /n/, nut
    • “/n/, /n/, /n/, not
    • “/n/, /n/, /n/, net
  • Have the children write an N for each /n/ they hear as you extend the words.
  • Write words that begin with N (e.g., nose, nail, nut, noodle, necklace, note, necktie, nine, needle).
  • Have the children find the Ns in the words and say the /n/ sound.
