*Nice and New

Objective
Recognize the letter N and associate it with the /n/ sound in words such as nice, neat, and new.

Materials:
- None
State the Objective
Tell the children that they will draw objects that start with N on a napkin as they listen for the /n/ sound in words such as not, nose, noodle, and nail.
Literacy Activities
Draw nice things on a new napkin
- Write an N and tell the children that it makes the /n/ sound.
- Draw a large square and explain that it is a pretend napkin.
- Tell the children that they will draw nice things that start with /n/ on the napkin (see example below).
- Say, “Draw a ___ (e.g., nose) on the nice new napkin!”
- Have the children draw other items that begin with N (e.g., nine, nail, necktie, noodle, note, necklace, needle, nut).
Identify the target letter
- Say a word that begins with /n/ (e.g., nice, nail, nut, not); ask the children if the word starts with /n/ while nodding your head yes.
- Give several examples of words that start with N (e.g., nut, nose, nail, noodle, nice, new) and have the children touch their noses when they hear an /n/ sound.
- Ask the children if the word boat starts with /n/ while shaking your head no.
Write the letter N
- Say words that begin with N while extending the initial /n/ sound:
- “/n/, /n/, /n/, nut”
- “/n/, /n/, /n/, not”
- “/n/, /n/, /n/, net”
- Have the children write an N for each /n/ they hear as you extend the words.
- Write words that begin with N (e.g., nose, nail, nut, noodle, necklace, note, necktie, nine, needle).
- Have the children find the Ns in the words and say the /n/ sound.
