State the Objective
Tell the children that they will associate the letter P with the /p/ sound as they play with Ps and learn words like put, pick, pull, place, and paper.
Literacy Activities
Write Ps on paper
- Comment as children write Ps on pieces of paper:
- “Put plenty of Ps on pieces of paper.”
- “I hear the /p/ sound in ‘Ps on pieces of paper.’”
- “Pick a pen or pencil to put Ps on pieces of paper.”
Play with Ps
- Have the children act on Ps in various ways:
- Place and put Ps down.
- Pick Ps up.
- Put Ps by a pencil.
- Put and place Ps on paper.
- Place Ps in a pile.
- Pat, poke, and pinch Ps.
- Put Ps on your palm.
- Press Ps on your palm.
- Pretend your P is a plane.
Point to P
- Read Pick Up P target text (see below) to the children.
- Have the children point to the letter P each time a word starts with /p/ in the text.
- Have the children perform the actions in the text while they chant or sing the text to the tune of “Frere Jacques” or another tune.
