State the Objective
Tell the children that they will answer quiet questions as they learn to write the letter Q and listen for the /kw/ sounds in words like quick, quiet, and questions.
Literacy Activities
Quickly make the /kw/ sounds
- Show the letter Q and tell the children that Q makes two sounds: /kw/.
- Ask the children to quickly and quietly say /kw/ when you point to a Q.
- Have the children stop saying /kw/ when you say ‘quit!’
Write Qs
- Have the children write the letter Q with their fingers in the air while saying /kw/.
- Have the children say /kw/ quietly as they write Qs on paper.
- Have the children clap or quack like a duck until you hold up the letter Q, signaling them to quit.
Answer Q questions
- Display the Quiet Q Questions (see below).
- Ask the Quiet Q Questions, pointing to a Q when you say a word that starts with /kw/.
- Reread the questions in a quiet whisper and have the children respond by showing a thumbs up or thumbs down.
- Quietly discuss the children’s answers to the questions.
