  • A chair
  • Some drops of water
  • A Ship Trip target text*
  • Piece of paper or cloth (optional)

State the Objective:
Tell the children that they will learn to write and read -ip words while they make sure that a ship does not tip or dip during a trip.

 

Literacy Activities:
Act out a story about a ship 

  • Tell the children that they will pretend that a chair is a ship while they take a trip.
  • Use the paper or cloth as the ship’s sail (optional).
  • Give the directions in the chart below and have the children perform the actions:
Teacher’s Directions Children’s Actions  
Skip, skip, skip to the ship.  Skip to the ship (the chair).
Do not slip or trip – just skip.   Pretend to slip and trip. Skip in place. 
Grip onto the ship. Hold on tight! Grip on tight to the ship.
This ship goes fast. The ship zips, zips, zips.  Move back and forth.
The ship tips. Tip the ship a bit to one side.
The ship dips under the water. Bend at the knees and say, “Dip, dip, dip!
The sail rips! Rip the paper or cloth (optional). 
The ship drips! Drip. Drip. Drip. The ship drips drops of water. Sprinkle drips of water and say, “Drip, drip, drip!”

  • Read the A Ship Trip target text (see below) to the children.
  • Have the children find the -ip words in the text.
  • Read the text with the children, supporting as needed.

Blend and segment -ip words

  • Help the children break ship into sounds (sh + ip), and clap when saying each sound.
    Say the full word (ship) and clap a third time.
    Repeat with other -ip words:
    tr + ip = trip
    d + ip = dip
    t + ip = tip
    r + ip = rip
     

Write and read words that end with ip

  • Write -ip, leaving a blank space in front of it.
  • Have the children write a letter in front of -ip to make a word (e.g., t, d, r, z).
  • Help the children read the -ip words.
