Target Words:

Materials:

  • -Ap Map (see example below)
  • Bottle caps (optional)
  • Paper signs with street names: Flap Street, Cap Street, Lap Street, Snap Street, and Clap Street

State the Objective

Tell the children that they will explore an -ap map as they rhyme, read, and write words that end with -ap, such as flap, gap, and cap.

Literacy Activities

Explore the -Ap Map

  • Place the street signs in different spots around the room.  
  • Show the children the map of Ap Town (example below) and read the street names.
  • Point out that all the street names rhyme because they end with ap.
  • Explore the -Ap Map together, following the directions in the chart:

Look at our -Ap Map for Flap Street.

Do you see Flap Street in -Ap Town?

Have the children flap their arms and say, “Flap, flap, flap.”

Look at our -Ap Map for Cap Street.

Do you see Cap Street in -Ap Town?

Have the children tap bottle caps or tap an imaginary cap on their heads while saying, “Tap, tap, tap the cap.”

Look at our -Ap Map for Lap Street.

Do you see Lap Street in -Ap Town?

Have the children sit cross-legged and tap their laps, saying, “Tap, tap, tap my lap.”

Look at our -Ap Map for Snap Street.

Do you see Snap Street in -Ap Town?

Have the children snap their fingers in unison, saying, “Snap, snap, snap!”

Look at our -Ap Map for Clap Street. 

Do you see Clap Street in -Ap Town?

Have the children clap their hands to a rhythm. 

We are almost to the end of our -Ap Map.

Look at our -Ap Map for Nap Street.

Have the children pretend to take a nap.

 

Identify and generate -ap words

  • Have the children underline the ap endings on the map and read the street names.
  • Show children a list of -ap words from the lesson, and point out that they have the same ending.
  • Help the children read the list of -ap words. 
  • Have the children draw their own -Ap Map using -ap words.
