Literacy Activities
Pretend to be a dog, frog, and hog
- Tell the children that a dog, frog, and hog sit on a log in a bog.
- Explain that a hog is a pig, and a bog is a wet and muddy place.
- Comment on how frog, dog, hog, and log rhyme.
- Read the Frog, Dog, and Hog on a Log target text (see below).

- Have the children sit on a pretend log (e.g., a folded towel, blanket, or bench) as they act out the story.
Blend and segment -og words
- Teach the children to blend word parts:
- Clap as you produce the initial consonant or blend (e.g., d), the -og ending, and the word (dog).
- Blend other og words:
- d + og = dog
- h + og = hog
- l + og = log
- fr + og = frog
- Write -og words (e.g., hog, log, fog, bog, jog) in a list and read them by saying each sound as you move your finger along the word from left to right.
Read target words in a text
- Display the Frog, Dog, and Hog on a Log target text.
- Have the children find the words that end in og.
-
Re-read the text, letting the children read the -og words.
