State the Objective

Tell the children that they will play a game called "Sit on It" as they hear and say words that end with it, such as pitit, and quit

Literacy Activities

Fill the pit

  • Draw a big pit (see example below) and explain that a pit is a big hole.
  • Tell the children that they will fit words in a pit.
  • Write a list of words that rhyme with it (e.g., pithitquitsit, knitbitfit).
  • Read the words and have the children echo them back.
  • Point out that all the words end in it.
  • Help the children make two signs: write 'It' on one and 'Pit' on the other.

Don't sit on it

  • Choose an area to be the pit and label it with the Pit sign.
  • Set up chairs in a circle facing out, and put the It sign on a chair.
  • Play music or hum, and invite the children to walk around the circle.
  • Tell the children to sit in a chair when the music stops.
  • As the children walk, chant “Don’t sit, don’t sit on it! Don’t quit until you’re it!”
  • When the music stops, have the child in the It chair sit in the pit for a little bit.
  • Say, “You fit on the It. It's your turn to sit in the pit for a bit!”
  • Remove the chair from the circle, and move the It sign to another chair.
  • Start humming or playing music again and repeat.

Practice rhyming

  • Remind the children of the words they played with: pititquitsitbit.
  • Say that you can think of words that rhyme with sit: knitbitfit
  • Help the children think of a word that rhymes with sit:
    • "How about pit?" Does pit rhyme with sit?" (Nod your head yes.)
    • "Do quit and sit rhyme?" (Nod your head yes.)
  • Say a pair of -it words (e.g., fit and sit) and have the children clap when they hear a rhyme.
  • Repeat with other sets of -it words (e.g., quit-sitpit-litbit-kitfit-knit; sit-bit).

Identify written rhyming words

  • Display a list of rhyming -it words: sitpitfitkitknitbitlit.
  • As you read the words, point out how they all end in it.
  • Have the children touch the -it in each word.
