State the Objective
Tell the children they are going to go on a fun run as they practice saying words that rhyme with run, such as sun, fun, and bun.

 

Literacy Activities 
Introduce target words

  • Show the children words that rhyme with run: sun, fun, and bun.
  • Read the list of words with the children.
  • Point out that all the words end with un

Fun in the sun

  • Draw a sun (see below).
  • Tell the children that you can think of words that rhyme with sun: fun, run, won, done, none, and ton.
  • Have the children say a word that rhymes with sun; give an example if needed.
  • Let the children write -un words on the sun: fun, run, bun.
  • Read the words with the children. 

Read Can You Run? 

  • Read the Can You Run? target text (see below) to the children.
  • Have the children find the -un words in the text.
  • Reread the text with the children, supporting as needed.

Race to the sun or bun

  • Read the Can You Run? target text with the children.
  • Divide the children into two teams: the Bun Team and the Sun Team.
  • Go outside and draw a bun and a sun on the ground.
  • Have the children take turns running to the sun or the bun.
  • Have the other children chant, “Run to the ____ (sun or bun).”

Rhyme with fun, run and sun       

  • Tell the children that you are going on a run and follow the directions in the chart:
Teacher Says Teacher Does
Let’s run! Run in place
It can be fun to run. Smile and run in place
Let’s run in the sun. Show picture of sun while running
Run! Run in place
Done? Pause and look at the children
Done! Stop and pretend to breathe hard
We won! Clap hands and cheer
  • Comment on the rhyming words you said: run, fun, sun, done, won.

Fill in the blanks

  • Write the sentences below, leaving blanks for -un words.  
  • Let the children fill in the blanks with -un words.
    • It was ____ (fun) to ____ (run).
    • We got to ____ (run) to a ____ (bun) or a____ (sun)
    • We got  a ____ (bun) or a ____ (sun).
    • We had ____ (fun).
