  • "I sell bells" sign
  • Nut shell, sea shell, or drawing of a shell*
  • Bell or drawing of a bell*
  • Sell a Bell and a Shell target text*

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will pretend to sell shells and bells while they read and rhyme words like shellbellwelltellsell, and yell.

Literacy Activities
Pretend to sell a bell

  • Write “I sell bells” on a piece of paper; display the sign and read it out loud.
  • Say to the children, “I tell you, ‘I can sell you a bell.’”
  • State that bellselltell, and yell rhyme.
  • Tell the children, “I yell, I sell a bell!”
  • Show the bell (or drawing of a bell) and make comments:
    • I yell, “I sell bells!”
    • Sell you a bell?
    • Tell your friend that I sell bells.
    • Yell, “Sell me a bell!”
    • Tell me, “Sell me a bell.”
    • I yell, “Bells!”
  • Have the children pretend to buy and ring a bell.

Pretend to sell a shell

  • Write “I sell shells” on a piece of paper; display the sign and read it out loud.
  • Show the children the shell (or drawing of a shell).
  • Have the children yell, “I sell a shell!” and pretend to sell a shell.
  • Let the children tell a friend, “I tell you, I sell a shell.”
  • Ask the children, “Do you have a shell to sell, a bell to sell, or things that smell?”
  • Respond to the children by saying, “Oh, you sell shells!”

Read words that end in ell

  • Show a list of -ell words (e.g., wellswellbelltellyellfellwellsmell)
  • Read the words to the children.
  • Reread the list with the children, supporting as necessary.

 Read about selling bells or shells 

  • Read the Sell a Bell and a Shell target text (see below) with the children.
  • Reread the text, fading support.

Write -ell words 

  • Write the -ell word ending.
  • Display the consonants wytsb, and sh.
  • Let the children make words by adding the initial consonants to the -ell ending. 
  • Read the words that the children create.
