*We Fed a Pet in a Shed

Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with fed (e.g., “Do bed and fed rhyme?”) and read and write words that end in ed.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- fed
- bed
- led
- red
- shed
Materials:
- Drawing of an animal in a shed (see example below)
- Box or bowl
- Imaginary pet food: pebbles, dry beans, or small crumpled pieces of paper (optional)
State the Objective
Tell the children that they will help a pet get fed and go to bed and that they will read and write words that end in ed, such as bed, red, led, and shed.
Literacy Activities
The pet needs to be fed
- Show the children a drawing of a pet (like the one below) and tell them the pet goes to bed in a red shed.
- Write -ed words around the shed (e.g., bed, red, shed, led, fed).
- Tell the children that the pet needs to be fed and show the bowl.
- Designate an area called the “shed” (draw or tape a line around the area, if desired), and let the children toss or drop the imaginary pet food into the bowl.
- Chant together, "We fed the pet in the shed, and the pet can go to bed – in the bed in the shed!"
Recognize rhyming words
- Have the children repeat pairs of words (e.g., bed, head; fed, spread; led, sled; tread, cat; head, said; pled, Ted; wed, fled)
- If the words rhyme, have the children touch their heads.
- If the word pairs don’t rhyme, have the children shake their heads “no.”
Write words that end in ed
- Write the ending ed and let the children make words by adding the letters b, r, f, and l to the ed ending
- “Bed starts with /b/. We need a b for /b/ to add to ‘ed’ to make the word bed.
- “Red starts with /r/. What letter makes the /r/ sound?” Put an r on -ed to make the word red.
-
“What letter does fed start with?” F. Write the word fed.Literacy Activities
