Objective

Recognize and produce the /f/ sound in a series of words that all begin with /f/.

Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • fuzz
  • freeze
  • frenzy
  • flap
  • flip
  • fold

Materials:

  • A folder with a flap 
  • Fuzz (e.g., fuzzy yarn, felt, fur, fuzz or lint from a dryer)
  • Book: The Great Fuzz Frenzy by Janet Stevens (optional)

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will feel and fold fuzz as they listen for words that start with the /f/ sound, such as fold, fleece, and frenzy.

Literacy Activities
Feel, fold, and flip the fuzz

  • Read The Great Fuzz Frenzy by Janet Stevens to the children (optional).
  • Have the children sit in a circle and give each child a piece of fuzz from the folder, pointing out that the word fuzz starts with the /f/ sound.
  • Let the children feel the fuzz on their face, feet, fingers, and forehead, and have them echo those words back to you, emphasizing the /f/ sound. 
  • Show the children how to do different /f/ actions with their fuzz (e.g., make the fuzz fall, feel the fuzz, fold the fuzz, flip the fuzz, freeze with the fuzz), then have the children do the actions.
  • Allow the children to choose one of the /f/ actions for the class to do with their fuzz.
  • Ask the children to listen as you say several /f/ words mixed with a few non-/f/ words and have them tap the fuzz on their forehead when they hear a word that starts with the /f/ sound, supporting as necessary.

More Practice
March and say the sounds in words 

  • Have the children march in place as they say each sound of the word fuzz as follows:
    • segment sounds: say /f/ (march right), say /u/ (march left), say /z/ (march right)
    • blend sounds: jump with both feet and say fuzz to blend the sounds into the whole word
  • Repeat with other words that start with /f/ (e.g., fun, feel, fall, fan, feed).
