State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will help a boy named Luke find his lost luggage as they listen for words that begin with the /l/ sound, such as long, lane, and letter. 

Literacy Activities
Act out Luke's Lost Luggage target text

• Cut out the picture cards and Luke’s luggage, and create a long lane made of two parallel strips of masking tape on the floor.
• Have the children sit on the outsides of the long lane and choose three children to act out a story about a boy named Luke (show Luke graphic) who lost his luggage full of things that start with the /l/ sound.
• Have the three children act out the parts of Luke, Liz, and Lauren as you read aloud the Luke's Lost Luggage target text (see below).
• Repeat acting out the target text with a different set (or sets) of children if desired.
• Ask the children what words they heard in the story that start with the /l/ sound, such as lock, lemon, and Luke.

Locate Luke's lost luggage

• Spread the picture cards out along the long lane
• Have the children take turns walking along the long lane on the floor to find one of Luke’s lost items.
• When the luggage or a picture card is found, have the child who found it tell what it is, then invite the children to repeat the name of the item, emphasizing the /l/ sound by repeating the sound before the word (e.g., /l/ /l/ /l/ luggage).
• Repeat until all the lost luggage is located.

More Practice
Identify the target sound

• Think of several words that begin with the /l/ sound (or use the picture cards for ideas) and a few that don't (e.g., egg, car, dog, pat).
• Have the children lie down on the floor and listen for words you say that start with the /l/ sound. 
  • If they hear a word that starts with /l/, let them lift a leg.
  • If the word they hear doesn't start with /l/, have them lie still.
  • If a child doesn't recognize the target sound, repeat the word again and ask if it starts with /l/ like Luke and licorice, nodding support if needed.
