Overview
The children will listen to a story about a girl who tripped and ripped her slip as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with slip, such as rip, trip, dip, flip, and tip.

Literacy Activity

  • Tell the A Slip With a Rip story from the point of view of a cut-out paper doll, emphasizing the words that rhyme with slip. 
  • Retell the story with actions as desired. 

More Practice

  • Review the events of the story with the children. 
  • Ask the children if they hear something that sounds the same in the words slip and rip. 
  • Tell the children that slip and rip rhyme because they both end with the -ip sound. 
  • Play a game in which the children must identify the pair of words that rhyme. 
    • Say a pair of words out loud, choosing two words that either both rhyme with slip or one that rhymes with slip and one that does not (e.g., rip and trip or slip and cow). 
    • As you say each pair, have the children stand if they hear two rhyming words and sit if they do not.

I have a rip in my slip.   
I was walking down the street, and I didn’t see a dip.  
It made me trip.   
I took a flip. I hit my hip, I hit my lip, and I got a rip in my slip.   
Now I have a sore hip, I have a sore lip, and I have a rip in my slip.   
I took my slip and gave a snip and clip with my scissor tip to make a strip (of tape).  
Give a snip. Snip. Snip. Snip.   
Then I took a clip (paper clip) and put it on the rip.   
With one quick ZIP! I fixed the rip in my slip. I fixed the rip with a strip (of tape) and with a clip (paper clip).

Objective:
Recognize and produce words that rhyme with rip. 

Materials:

  • A Slip with a Rip story 
  • Paper doll

Activity: A slip with a rip

  • Read the story A Slip with a Rip to your child, and help them act it out with the paper doll as it is told. 
  • Pause whenever you come to a word that rhymes with rip, and let your child guess the word that goes in the blank (support as needed).  
  • Make a list of words that rhyme with rip with your child (e.g., lip, tip, trip, rip, slip). 
  • List the words for your child on a piece of paper while occasionally suggesting a word that does not rhyme with rip. 
    • Let your child determine whether or not each word belongs on the rhyming word list.
