N Noodle Necklace

Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- noodle
- necklace
- neat
- nice
Materials:
- One premade noodle necklace
- String, about 20 inches long—one for each child
- Dry noodles (macaroni, penne, or any pasta with holes)
- Letter cards
Overview
The children will make a neat noodle necklace as they recognize and name the letter N.
Literacy Activities
Make a noodle necklace
- Wrap tape around one end of each string to make it easier to thread, and hole-punch the top of the letter cards.
- Write the letter N on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the N in the air with their fingers.
- Mix up the letter cards and place the cards in a pile face down.
- Have the children choose a letter card and hold up the chosen letter, then say the name of the letter together.
- If the letter is an N, have the children put the letter by the noodles.
- If the letter is not an N, have the children place the letter in a discard pile.
- Give each child a string, several noodles, and a few N letter cards.
- Tape the untaped end of the string to the table so that the noodles don’t fall off as the children thread them.
- As the children string their noodles and letter cards, have them say, “N on the necklace” and “N by the noodles.”
- When the children have finished, help them tie their necklaces around their necks as they say, “My N noodle necklace looks nice!”
More Practice
Identify the target letter
- Write the letter N and another letter that the class has previously learned on the whiteboard.
- Ask the children which letter is the letter N.
- Repeat this activity several times with a different distractor letter each time.
Write the target letter
- Show the children how to write a letter N by writing it on the whiteboard or on chart paper.
- Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil and have the children write the letter N multiple times.
- If time allows, help the children cut out their letters, hole-punch them, and add them to their noodle necklace.
