Overview

Literacy Activities
Roll R ribbons

  • Write the letter R on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the R in the air with their fingers.
  • Mix up the letter cards, then let the children choose a card one at a time.
  • Help the children decide whether or not the letter on the card is an R.
    • If the letter is an R, place it by the rolls of ribbon.
    • If the letter is not an R, place it in a discard pile.
    • If a child misidentifies a distractor letter as an R, have him or her look at the R on the whiteboard and compare it to the letter he or she picked.
  • Let the children tape or staple the R letter cards to the ribbon.
  • Demonstrate how to roll and unroll the R ribbons and let the children try doing it too.

Roll R papers

  • Have the children write the letter R multiple times down the middle of a piece of paper.
  • Tape or staple these pages together to make one long paper.
  • Allow the children to help you roll all the R pages together.
  • Let the children roll and unroll the R pages as they did with the R ribbons.
