Literacy Activities
Roll R ribbons
- Write the letter R on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the R in the air with their fingers.
- Mix up the letter cards, then let the children choose a card one at a time.
- Help the children decide whether or not the letter on the card is an R.
- If the letter is an R, place it by the rolls of ribbon.
- If the letter is not an R, place it in a discard pile.
- If a child misidentifies a distractor letter as an R, have him or her look at the R on the whiteboard and compare it to the letter he or she picked.
- Let the children tape or staple the R letter cards to the ribbon.
- Demonstrate how to roll and unroll the R ribbons and let the children try doing it too.
Roll R papers
- Have the children write the letter R multiple times down the middle of a piece of paper.
- Tape or staple these pages together to make one long paper.
- Allow the children to help you roll all the R pages together.
- Let the children roll and unroll the R pages as they did with the R ribbons.
