Literacy Activities
Step on S

  • Write the uppercase letter S and the lowercase letter s on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children say the letter name as they write the and s in the air with their fingers.
  • Tape the large letter S sign to the floor or write a large letter S on butcher paper or the sidewalk.
  • Have the children stand by the letter S and have them name the letter.
  • Allow the children to perform various actions on or around the letter S (e.g., stand, stomp, step, slide, spin, skip, sneak).
  • Mix up the letter cards, then have the children choose a card one at a time.
  • Help the children decide whether or not the letter on each card is an uppercase S or a lowercase s.
    • If the letter is an S, have the children tape it to the large letter S on the ground.
    • If the letter is not an S, place it in the discard pile.
    • If a child misidentifies a distractor letter as an S or an s, have him or her look at the S and s on the whiteboard and compare them to the letter he or she picked.

More Practice
Identify the target letter

  • Write a list of the words from the activity that begin with the letter S (e.g., stand, stomp, step, slide, spin, skip, sneak).
