- Bee-Wigged by Cece Bell (Candlewick, 2008) (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will help make a wig as they recognize and name the uppercase letter W and the lowercase letter w.
Literacy Activities
Learn the letter name and sound
- Write the uppercase and lowercase letters W and w, name the letters, and tell the children that W makes the /w/ sound.
- Have the children say the letter name and sound as they write the W and w in the air with their fingers: "/w, w, w/-W!"
- Read the book Bee-Wigged by Cece Bell to the children, emphasizing the letter W (optional).
Write the letter
- Have the children write the letter W on small pieces of paper.
- Have them say the letter sound /w/ with each stroke of the letter: "/w, w, w/."
Make a wild, wacky W wig
- Create a paper wig (see instructions below), or show the children a real wig.
- Ask the children if they want to help make a wild, wacky W wig.

Let the children take turns choosing a letter card (see below).
- Help the children decide whether each letter is a W, a w, or another letter.
- If the letter is a W or a w, attach it to the wig.
- Ask the children if they want to walk around wearing the wild W wig (optional).
