State the Objective
The children will work to find the letter W as they recognize and name the uppercase and lowercase letters W and w.
Literacy Activities
Work to find the letter W
- Write and name the uppercase and the lowercase letters W and w, name the letters, and say the /w/ sound.
- Have children say the letter name and sound as they write the W and w in the air with their fingers.
- Write a W on the wagon picture (see below) and place it in the middle of the room.
- Play the "Whistle While You Work" song for the children and ask if they know how to whistle.
- Scatter the letter cards (see below) near the wagon picture.
- Have the children work to clean up the letter cards as you play the song.
- Help the children decide whether or not each letter is a W, a w, or some other letter.
- If a letter is a W or w, have the children put it near the W wagon.
Identify the target letter
- Give the children the Work to Find W page (see below).
- Instruct the children to work to find and circle each letter W on the page.
- Have the children say, “Wow! A W!” every time they circle a W.
Write the target letter
- On the handwriting practice page (see below), have the children work to write the letter W.
- Let the children trace the letters and then write the letter W on their own.
