Materials:

None

State the objective
Tell the children that they will zoom in a zig-zag path as they recognize and name the uppercase lowercase letters Z and z.

 

Literacy Activities
Z is for Zebra

  • Write the letters Z and z on a whiteboard, name the letters, and tell they children that the letters make the /z/ sound.
  • Write and say zebra, emphasizing the /z/ sound.
  • Have the children repeat the /z/ sound.
  • Tell the children that the letter Z is shaped like a zigzag.
  • Have the children zip their fingers along the Z while saying "zig" or "zag" each time the path changes direction.

Zoom in a zigzag

  • Set up a zigzag-shaped path, placing a letter Z or z at each point where the path changes direction.
  • Let the children take turns zipping and zooming along the zigzag path.
  • Have the children say "zig" and "zag" each time they change direction.

Identify the target letter

  • Make a list of the words from the activity that begin with the letter Z (e.g., zip, zoom, zig, zag)
  • Have the children say /z/ and circle the letter Z in the words on the list.

Materials

  • Zebra picture
  • Letter cards
  • Small pieces of paper

Activity: Zoom to Find Z

  • Write the letter Z on a piece of paper, then have your child name the letter.
  • Scatter the letter cards around the room.
  • Give your child the zebra graphic and have him or her circle the letter Z in the word zebra.
  • Let your child pretend to be a zebra as he or she zooms around the room collecting the letter cards.
  • Help your child decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase letter Z or a lowercase letter z.
    • If the letter is a Z, keep it.
    • If the letter is not a Z, discard it.
  • Have your child write the letter Z on small pieces of paper, then repeat the activity using his or her letter cards.
  • The activity can be repeated several times.
