State and Model the Objective
The children will trace a face and then read and write words that end with -ace, such as face, trace, lace, space, place, and pace.
Literacy Activities
Trace a lace to make a face
- Give the children shoelaces, or strings with masking-tape tips, and the picture of a face (found below) to trace.
- Tell the children to find a space to trace.
- Have the children trace the edge and parts of the face with the laces’ tips.
Create a new face
- Invite the children to make a new face by using a lace to make the outline of a face and then tracing around the lace.
- Ask the children to use a lace to make a mouth on the face and to then trace around it.
- Have the children draw two eyes and a nose to complete the face.
Trace a face and -ace words
- Let the children trace the faces on the Trace a Silly Face page (found below).
- Have the children label each face by writing face.
- Give the children the word-tracing cards (found below) and have them read the words after they’ve traced them.
Pace around a face
- Help the children make a large, oval face shape on the floor with the laces.
- Have the children put down the large face parts (found below) to complete the face.
- Read the song "Pace Around a Face" to the tune of "Happy and You Know It" with the children and invite them to sing the song as they pace around the face.
Build Words
- With the word-building cards (found below), help the children make new words.
- Change the beginning consonant(s): face→ lace, pace→ race, trace→ space
- Change the ending consonant: face→ fade, race→ rate, pace→ pane
Read target words in texts
- Engage the children in reading the text Trace a Lace to Make a Face (found below).
- Have the children make a list of the words in the text that use the -ace pattern.
- Read the text together again, fading support.
- Repeat with the "Pace Around a Face" song.
Write about the activity using target words and patterns
- Help the children create a word wall of -ace words (e.g., face, lace, trace, pace, place, space)
- Have children use words from the word wall as they write about tracing (e.g., “I can trace a face”).
