Tap and Snap a Cap

Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with tap (e.g., "Do tap and snap rhyme?") and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with tap.").
Lesson Plan
Target Words:

Materials:
- Bottle caps
- Caps with flaps that snap (e.g., from shampoo or spice containers)
- Clap and Tap a Cap chant*

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will tap and snap caps as they hear and say words that rhyme with tap, such as cap, flap, clap, snap, and slap.
Literacy Activities
Tap, slap, snap and flap a cap
- Give each child two bottle caps (if possible, one that has a flap to snap).
- Read the chant Clap and Tap a Cap (found below) to the children.
- Allow the children to act out the chant using the bottle caps.
- Clap the caps together
- Snap a cap (open and snap close the “flap” on the cap)
- Flap the caps (wave the caps or flaps up and down)
- Tap a cap (give one cap a little tap with the other cap)
- Slap a cap (give a little slap with your fingers)
Engage the children in simultaneous “reading” of the chant
- Read Clap and Tap a Cap (see below) with the children.
- Point to each word in a left to right sequence
- Involve the children in shadow “reading” of the predictable, repetitive elements in the chant
Blend word parts to make words
- Ask the children, “What am I saying, . . .
- cl + ap? = clap!
- sl + ap? = slap!
- sn + ap? = snap!
- fl + ap? = flap!
- t + ap? = tap!
