State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will learn about what a seal eats for a meal and practice saying words that rhyme with seal, such as realmeal, and eel.

Literacy Activities
A seal's meal

  • Have the children sit in a circle, give each child a picture card (found below), and have them tape it on a paper plate.
  • Tell the children that most seals like to eat fish for their meals.
  • Go around the circle and have each child hold up their plate one by one.
  • Guide the children in identifying what is on each picture card and determining whether or not it rhymes with seal
    • If the child's meal rhymes with seal (e.g., wheel), have the other children say, "Wheel rhymes with seal."
    • If the child's meal doesn't rhyme with seal (e.g., fish), have the children say, "That's a real seal meal!"
  • Collect and review each "meal" on the plates and have the children bark like a seal when they hear a word that rhymes with seal (e.g., peel).

Practice rhyming

  • Remind the children of the words they played with (e.g., seal, wheel, meal, eel, heel).
  • Ask each child to think of another word that rhymes with seal (support as needed).

Recognize rhyming words

  • Have the children walk around in a big circle and listen as you say words that do or do not rhyme with seal (e.g., heel, wheel, fish, reel, peel, pig).
    • When the children hear a word that rhymes with seal (e.g., heelwheel) have them clap like a seal.
    • When the children hear a word that doesn't rhyme (e.g., fish) have them sit silently in place.
  • Repeat as many times as desired.
