Objective

Read and blend sounds for words that end in -ig such as pig, wig, jig, and dig.

Lesson Plan and Procedure

Overview 
The children will pretend to be pigs with wigs doing a jig as they read and create words such as wig, pig, jig, big, and dig.
 

Literacy Activities
Make a big wig for a pig 

  • Involve the children in making pig wigs using the Pig Wig Instructions (found below).
  • Help the children write -ig words on the pieces of the wig.

Sing or chant the Pig Wig Jig chant

  • Have the children be in a circle and teach the children the Pig Wig Jig chant (see below).
  • Have a child stand in the middle of the circle as the pig in a big wig. 
  • Choose a second child to walk around the circle while the class chants the first verse of the Pig Wig Jig.
  • Permit the second child to join the pig in the middle and do a jig together

as the class sings or chants the second verse.

  • Allow other children to be pigs doing jigs in the circle.

More Practice
Read target words in a text 

  • Read the Pig Wig Jig chant together as a class. 
  • Read the text again, fading support.
  • Have the children help make a list of all of the -ig words in the text. 
  • Involve the children in blending the sounds to make words:
    • Initial consonant and rime ending as in /p/ + /ig/ = pig
    • Individual phonemes as in /p/ + /i/ + /g/  = pig

Clap out sounds in words 

  • Have the children clap once for each sound in the word pig (/p/ /i/ /g/).
  • Ask the children how many sounds they hear in the word pig.
  • Clap for each sound in other words: jig, wig, dig, big, fig, rig.

Activity: A Pig in a Wig 

  • Follow the Pig Wig Instructions to make a paper wig.
  • Read the Pig Wig Jig chant as your child wears the wig and pretends to walk down a street, greet a pig, and do a jig.
  • Read the Pig Wig Jig chant with your child. 
  • Have your child underline the words ending in -ig in the chant.
  • Together with your child, blend the beginning sound with the -ig ending (e.g., /p/ + /ig/ = pig) for each of the -ig words.
