Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • jog
  • frog
  • dog
  • hog
  • bog
  • fog
  • log

Materials:

  • Frog Jog chant (see target text below)
  • Frog footprints (set up a trail around the room) (see below)
  • Hog and dog graphics placed along the trail (in the same order as the chant) (see below)
  • Frog graphic (placed at end of the trail) (see below)

State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will hunt for a frog and hear and say words that rhyme with jog, such as bog, fog, log, dog, hog, and frog.

Practice the skill within an activity

Frog Jog

  • Before beginning the activity make a trail of frog footprints (see below) on the floor around the room.
  • Teach the children the Frog Jog chant (see target text below).
  • Explain that another name for a pig is a "hog."
  • Explain that another name for mud is "bog."
  • Have the children say the Frog Jog chant as they follow the frog footprints, pointing to the hog and dog graphics (see below) along the way.
  • Have the children jog to the frog graphic (see below) at the end of the trail when they see it.
  • Ask the children to take turns saying a word they heard in the activity that rhymes with jog.

Apply the skill

Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with jog
    • Remind the children of the words they played with (hog, dog, jog, frog, bog).
    • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with jog (tog, fog, log).
    • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with jog
    • If a child doesn’t respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
      • “How about log? Does log rhyme with jog?” (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme)
      • “Do dog and jog rhyme?” (Nod your head yes)
  • Recognize rhyming words
    • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g. frog, bog).
    • Ask the children to put their thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
    • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., fog, jog; hog, dog; frog, duck; tog, log; dog, fly).
    • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words.
